How much is CIS tax?
If you're registered with HMRC under the Construction Industry Scheme, contractors deduct 20% from your labour. If you're not registered, they must deduct 30%. Subcontractors with gross payment status have nothing deducted and settle everything through Self Assessment.
Is CIS taken off materials?
No. Materials, plant hire and VAT are excluded — which is why it pays to split labour and materials clearly on every invoice you send. Get that split wrong and you'll have too much deducted.
